I believe most of our problems in life are the result of relationships, and I believe even stronger that the healing for those problems usually comes through relationships. Because of this, I believe that the relationship between the therapist and the client is the foundation for therapeutic change. Done well, I believe that the process enacted between the therapist and the client needs to honor the client’s personal history and subjective worldview by acknowledging the client’s typical ways of managing intrapersonal and interpersonal conflicts based on previous experiences. Through the counseling process, the client can begin to try new ways of relating with the therapist, and that the therapist will be a “safe haven” as the client works through his or her difficulties.
It’s essential for the counselor to be actively engaged, while showing a genuine interest in the client as a person. The counselor will demonstrate understanding of what is going on, discern key concerns, and offer up something that is meaningful or helpful.
The primary means I use to assist the client is the interpersonal model. It’s an integrative approach that incorporates psychodynamic theory, family systems and attachment theory.
In addition, I work from a faith-based perspective and use these elements when appropriate within the counseling session. I do not discriminate against anyone on the basis of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion or national origin.
